Malhun Hatun — The Legal Wife

According to Ottoman historical sources, Malhun Hatun was the legal wife of Osman I and the mother of Sultan Orhan — the second Ottoman ruler, who would go on to massively expand the territories his father had founded.

This makes Malhun Hatun's historical significance enormous. She is the mother of the line that would eventually produce Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. Without her, the Ottoman dynasty as we know it does not exist.

For many years, historians debated her origins. Popular tradition long held that she was the daughter of the famous Sheikh Edebali. However, modern historical research has clarified that Edebali's daughter was actually Rabia Bala — a different woman entirely. Malhun Hatun is now believed to have descended from Ömer Bey, likely a ruler of the Amouri Principality in northwest Anatolia.
